“To regard beauty as a luxury adornment or a social signifier was to miss the true potential of the experience.” I think that this statement is very interesting. It’s saying that people should look beyond the price tag or that a price tag shouldn’t be the reason why a piece of art work of any kind is beautiful. He wants people to look at art, without considering the monetary value of it. I think of beauty along the terms of confidence. I think that if someone is confident in a piece of work then they believe it is beautiful. But I also think that beauty is definitely up to personal preference. I think that society today views beauty as perfection. Beauty is malleable in the face of society in which people have to fit perfectly into a specific body type, you have to fit it perfectly and own it. You can’t be anything in-between though. I also think that society’s main focus is on people being beautiful not paintings or any other source of art. The other quote from Armstrong’s essay that I am thinking of using is from the fifth page when he says, “the point of beauty is to elevate the soul.” I really like this quote because I think that it’s a lot different than how people view beauty and being beautiful today. I think that he’s talking more about when we look at objects and scenery, not just at other people.

Emma,
I love that you brought up confidence. I feel like confidence (and sometimes courage) can play a huge role in acknowledging what you find beautiful and what you don’t find beautiful.
Interesting thing to think about–do you think it’s possible to use beauty as a tool to build the confidence/courage to better enjoy it?
